Start New Projects, Don’t Forget the Old Ones

two friendsThere is a childhood song which goes “Make new friends, but keep the old ones. One is silver and the other’s gold.” I think that adage can be valuable in life and business as well. I have a confession: I get excited about projects quickly and easily. Sometimes I say yes too quickly. A successful business, and life for that matter, is about sustainability over the long haul. Passion is important, a plan is crucial.

I am excited to announce the upcoming launch of two new projects: My Friends Say The Darndest Things and Legalize Trans. They are two very different projects and I’m extremely excited about them both. My Friends Say The Darndest Thing is a comedy entertainment project I am starting with my randomly-assigned-freshman-year college roommate which chronicles the ridiculous and hilarious things our friends say. Legalize Trans is a campaign to raise awareness of the lack of inclusivity within American Apparel’s “Legalize Gay” campaign and provide an artistic and educational outlet for a productive response.

A year ago, I didn’t foresee either of these projects. My plan was to create & maintain quality websites for a number of clients. I still do that. Then I added video production to my list of offerings for clients. In May I went to Michigan to self-produce a documentary featuring young adult-led activism in Christian communities. And of course, now I have these two projects.

So, what’s the lesson?

In the excitement of new projects and prospects, it is important to not loose track of your foundation. What is your thing and how does each new potential adventure fit into that? It’s important to start new projects (and make new friends) to keep up momentum, keep up the excitement, and keep things fresh. And it’s also important to maintain the work which is important to you, which has a history with you, and in some cases, which pays you. And of course sometimes, you just need to say yes and go for it!
