Through self-employment we are able to setup out of broken, exploitative systems and plugin into life-giving alternative structures. We’re able to regain control of our time and skills and bodies. Self-employment can be an act of resistance to the powers that would limit us and others.
It can be hard to strike out on your own, can’t it? Everything we’ve been taught leads us towards conformity with the-way-things-are: study hard, get “good” grades, go to a “respected” college, get a “steady” job, put in time at your 9 to 5 (or 9 to 6 or 8 to 7, as it might be in your case). Do you ever wonder, “Is there more to life?” or “Do I have to settle for this?” You may have other interests–singing in a chorus, volunteering at a school, or speaking with your senator–and you just don’t have enough time. Who can blame you? So let’s imagine for a moment that another way is possible. What would that look like for you?
